Key Competencies and Skills

Wiremen specializing in Light and Power installations are trained to perform various electrical wiring tasks. This includes the installation of different types of wiring, such as cleat, conduit, casing, concealed, etc., in diverse settings such as houses, factories, workshops, and other establishments for light and power supply.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Studying diagrams and plans of wiring and marking points for light, power, and other electrical installations.
  • Installing various kinds of electrical wiring using techniques like cleat, conduit, casing, and concealed wiring.
  • Erecting switchboards and fixing switch box casings, cleats, conduits, ceiling roses, switches, meters, etc., according to the wiring plan.
  • Drawing wires in two-way or three-way systems as prescribed and making electrical connections through plugs and switches with a focus on safety.
  • Fixing fuses, covers, light brackets, holders, shades, tube and mercury lights, fans, etc.
  • Testing and checking installed wiring for leakage and continuity using tools like a mugger.
  • Certifying wiring as correct for connecting mains after ensuring it meets safety standards.
  • Checking existing wiring for defects, restoring current supply, and repairing or replacing defective switches, plug sockets, blown fuses, or faulty wiring as necessary.
  • May involve the repair of simple electrical domestic appliances.
